For Immediate Release: Monday, December 23, 2013
Award-Winning Network-in-a-Box (NIB)® Service Credited with Saving Lives in a Remote Area
Hanover, MD – December 23, 2013 – Tecore Networks, a pioneer supplier of 3G and 4G/LTE network infrastructure, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Mobile Star Award for its Network-in-a-Box (NIB)® System. The 2013 Mobile Star Awards™ program is hosted annually by the mobile technology news and directory site MobileVillage.com. The award comes thanks to the role it played in providing lifesaving communications in rural Alaska in April of 2013.
“Leveling the playing field by providing high quality wireless coverage in areas where larger providers cannot, or will not, go is a core mission for us at Tecore Networks and can sometimes be a matter of life and death,” said Jay Salkini, President & CEO of Tecore Networks. “We are honored to be recognized by MobileVillage and their readership for the value our cutting-edge, rugged networks are providing to people in remote and austere areas.”
What began as a typical hunting trip for two brothers to an isolated reef in Yakutat Bay nearly turned tragic when the anchor of their skiff gave way and the boat started to drift out to sea. After a failed attempt to reclaim their boat from the icy water, the water-soaked brothers thought they were out of options. As the tide rose across the reef, they soon realized they had a cell phone with them (purchased just days prior to the trip). Once they climbed to the highest location on the reef they were able to place the lifesaving call to their family, thanks to the new network provided by Tecore. Within the hour, help arrived and they were transported back to safety. “We congratulate Tecore and Jay Salkini on winning the Superstar Award in the Emergency Response Success Story Category — it is the only competition where today’s most exciting new mobile products and companies can compete against established competitors on a more level playing field,” says Mobile Star Awards director Gary Thayer. “A major part of this is because votes are cast by real users who really love the products—these are the mobile early adopters, mobile IT professionals, and tech journalists who dominate our readership. And after 13 years, the mobile industry recognizes Mobile Star Awards winners and nominees as the star innovators to watch and follow.”
While the wireless industry has shifted its focus to small cells and increased throughput, Tecore has maintained a focus on building systems and architectures that deliver the same capabilities and services available in highly populated areas to the rural and remote locations of America and around the world.
Tecore’s NIB is a compact and complete mobile communication core and RAN system designed to cost-effectively serve hundreds to several thousand subscribers, operating as an extension of an operator’s main network but capable of functioning independently in the event of backhaul issues. Its platform delivers game changing innovations for 4G HSPA and LTE network deployments. The NIB is built on its award winning Network-in-a-Box technology enabling ubiquitous service at the edge while optimizing bandwidth utilization. The NIB maximizes network availability in harsh or rural and remote deployments by leveraging key Tecore technology providing continued local operation when connectivity is lost with the rest of the network.
